The Procedure

The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique® offers an exciting breakthrough in the treatment of gum recession. Traditional treatment, though effective, involves gum grafting procedures which can be time-consuming and uncomfortable. This new restorative method is scalpel- and suture-free, and results in minimal discomfort to the patient. The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique® procedure, performed at our Brampton dental practice by Dr . Devang Gandhi, uses specially designed instruments to make a tiny hole in the treatment area. The doctor will then loosen the surrounding gum tissue and gently glide it into place, covering any tooth structure that has been exposed due to recession. If you suffer from receding gums due to periodontal disease, aggressive brushing habits, or chronic teeth grinding, and would like to explore how this minimally invasive technique can benefit you, please contact our office to schedule a consultation with Dr . Devang Gandhi.

Treating Gum Recession

Because gum recession is a gradual process, most people are not even aware they have it. You may notice your teeth look longer than used to or experience sensitivity, or your dentist may alert you to the condition. Gum recession is not just an aesthetic issue; when the gums recede, the sensitive roots of the teeth become exposed and leave room for pockets to form between the teeth and gums. These pockets provide ideal conditions for harmful bacteria and tartar to build up, which can cause even more oral health problems.

The traditional treatment for gum recession is soft tissue grafting. During this type of procedure, a small piece of epithelial tissue is taken from another area of the mouth, typically the roof of the mouth, and stitched into place over the exposed portion of the tooth root. This method can often be time-consuming if multiple teeth need to be treated, and can be very painful and require sutures to facilitate healing.

A New Approach to Treatment

The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique® offers a number of unique benefits, and has revolutionized the way we look at treating gum recession. Instead of scalpels, this method uses a tiny needle to create a small hole in the healthy soft tissue of the patient's mouth, above the tooth that requires treatment. This small opening can accommodate specialized instruments that Dr . Devang Gandhi will use to gently loosen and expand the superficial gum tissue, covering the exposed areas where the soft tissue has receded.

Once the gum tissue has been modified, Dr . Devang Gandhi will place small collagen strips in the treatment area. This will encourage natural collagen and elastin production, which will promote healing and reduce inflammation. By simply adjusting gum tissue in the treatment area, we are able to eliminate the need for grafts and sutures and perform the treatment with minimal pain and discomfort to the patient.
